Attention Homes, Boulder County’s only youth shelter, is gearing up to host its seventh annual Sleep Out to raise awareness for Boulder’s homeless youth. Homelessness is a chronic problem in our country, and approximately 50% of homeless adults began as displaced children. Homeless individuals tend to experience significantly higher levels of depression and PTSD than the general population, and there’s much to be done to combat this issue. If you’d like to participate in the Sleep Out to benefit Boulder County’s homeless youth, here’s what you need to know:
On November 8, Attention Homes and its supporters will sleep outdoors between the Attention Homes administration building and the First United Methodist Church. This event aims to foster empathy for the homeless population in Colorado and beyond, as participants will get a brief glimpse of what it’s like to sleep outside during the winter months. All who attend the Sleep Out will have the opportunity to fundraise for homeless youth, and the goal is to raise a minimum of $1,000 for at-risk kids.
Registration is required for the Sleep Out, so please register online in advance if you’d like to attend. This event is primarily intended for participants aged 18+, but minors aged 12+ are allowed to attend with a registered parent or guardian. On the night of the event, be sure to bring plenty of warm clothes and a comfortable sleeping bag, as you’ll be sleeping out on the lawn. Bathrooms are easily accessible, but plan to bring your own toiletries for the overnight stay. Once you’ve registered, be on the lookout for an email from Attention Homes with further details on what to expect and how to start fundraising.
