Our state is famous for its gorgeous fall foliage, but this year’s leaf peeping season is going to be a little different. Although many areas had a rainy spring, the summer has been unusually dry, which means that the peak of fall color will arrive earlier. Interested in learning more about when and where to find the best fall colors throughout Colorado? Here’s what you need to know:
September 15th-29th: Steamboat, Rocky Mountain National Park, and Summit County
Steamboat, Rocky Mountain National Park, and Summit County will kick off the fall season, with some estimates predicting peak color as early as September 15. If you’re planning a trip out this way, aim to go between September 15 and 29. Eastern Summit County is expected to have a particularly vibrant fall, since this area received plenty of rainfall during the spring.
September 22nd-October 4th: Vail, Aspen, Crested Butte, and Grand Mesa
Aspen is the most popular destination in the state for leaf peeping, but this year’s drought might mean the leaves aren’t as vibrant. Still, Aspen looks beautiful all year round—so if you’re stopping by, the best time to visit is between September 22nd and October 4th. The same applies to Vail, Crested Butte, and Grand Mesa.
September 29th-October 13th: Telluride, Ouray, Ridgway, and Sangre de Cristo Mountains
Planning a trip to the quiet mountain towns this fall? Telluride, Ouray, Ridgway, and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains are great stops for fall sightseeing. For the best colors, aim to visit between September 29th and October 13th.
October 6th-20th: Durango and Pagosa Springs
In the southwestern part of the state, the brightest fall foliage takes a little longer to arrive. Durango and Pagosa Springs are both stunning destinations worth the drive, but this year, postpone your visit until October. Your best chance to see the foliage is expected to be between October 6th and 20th.
October 13th-27th: Denver and Colorado Springs
If you want to stay closer to home, Denver and Colorado Springs will display their fall colors in mid-to-late October. This is an ideal time of year for a day trip, including a hike through Golden Gate Canyon State Park or Kenosha Pass.
October 20th-November 3rd: Fruita and Grand Junction
The westernmost part of Colorado will see the changing of leaves later in the season, with peak colors not appearing until late October or early November. Grand Junction and Fruita are absolutely beautiful during this time of year, with plenty of sightseeing spots that make the trip really worthwhile. The Colorado National Monument is a must-see!
