Attention Homes is an organization based in Boulder and its mission is to help youth who are facing homelessness. Founded in 1966, Attention Homes has served more than 12,000 young people in times of adversity. On November 5, this youth shelter is hosting its ninth annual Sleep Out for Homeless Youth event. Interested in attending? Here’s what you need to know:
When and Where
The Sleep Out will commence on Thursday, November 5 at 7:00 pm and will end at 6:30 am on Friday, November 6. Due to COVID-19 concerns, the Sleep Out will consist of several small pods located in the yards of the pod leaders. Each pod leader will comply with social distancing requirements and measure out at least six feet of space between each participant. If you would like to host a pod, please reach out to Becca Blay at email@example.com.
About the Sleep Out
Each team will set up a fundraising page to benefit the organization. The first Sleep Out raised $50,048 with the help of 32 sleepers, and the numbers continue to grow each year. Last year, 132 sleepers raised an astounding $152,000.
This is an especially important year to raise funds to benefit homeless youth in our community. In these challenging times due to the pandemic, Attention Homes has seen an increase in young people (aged 12-24) needing assistance with housing. The organization has already reached 100% capacity, and there’s a waitlist of young folks who are in critical need of support and a safe place to call home.
Whether you choose to participate as a sleeper or simply donate to the fundraising initiative, you’ll be benefiting an important cause. If you decide to join a team for the Sleep Out, you’ll still be able to enjoy a group experience while practicing social distancing. Once you’re all settled in with your pod, your group will join a Zoom meeting from 7:00-8:15 pm. Pizza will be supplied by local restaurants and instant coffee will be provided to help you wake up bright and early at 6:30 am the next morning.
Attention Homes helps hundreds of young people in our community each year. Those who utilize the services of this organization are often members of the LGBTQ+ community or have aged out of the foster care system and have nowhere else to turn.
