Trash the Runway is celebrating its 14th year and coming to Boulder on Thursday, February 29th at 7pm. This Leap Day event takes place at the Macky Auditorium on the CU campus. Here’s what you need to know before you go:
The Mission of Trash the Runway
Trash the Runway believes that recycled couture has never been so chic. A fashion show that walks the runway for Mother Nature, the mission of this event is to encourage community youth to get involved in social and environmental causes while exploring their creativity, inventiveness, and critical thinking skills. Ultimately, this event aims to make a difference on a sustainable level, one recycled item at a time.
A Creative Competition
Trash the Runway is put on by Creative Lab at Common Threads (a consignment shop in Boulder that highlights reused clothing). It challenges students in middle and high school to reject retail and design clothes made out of 100% recycled items.
The competitors only have two months to make their creations (although they can collect material year-round). It’s not just about reused clothing, either; some out-of-the-box items that are fair game include wallpaper samples, cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, and bubble gum wrappers. From drop cloths to beach towels to old newspapers and National Geographic magazines, as long as it’s recycled, it’s usable!
Blue Sky Bridge
Trash the Runway partners with Blue Sky Bridge, an organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse through education and intervention. Proceeds from the show aid in this fight, providing a sense of community and a focus on altruism.
If you’re ready for a night out dedicated to a good cause, this event is certainly in fashion. Get your tickets here before they sell out!
