Boulder, Colorado has over 45,000 acres of dedicated parkland, making it one of the best places to get outside and revel in the diversity of Colorado’s landscapes. Take advantage of Boulder’s beauty this summer by enjoying a picnic with a delicious spread prepared by Boulder favorite Cured. Here are our top spots to relax and admire our beautiful scenery.
Chautauqua Park
No summer is complete without a picnic at Chautauqua Park. This expansive park provides you with stunning views of the Flatirons and the chance to eavesdrop on summer concerts in the park. Picnic on the green in the evening, or stroll 3/4th of a mile south of the Chautauqua trailhead to the Bluebell Shelter. Or go for a morning hike on any of the trails in the area, like the Royal Arch or the Baseline Trail, and reward yourself with a hearty lunch at the end. There are dozens of places in Chautauqua Park where you can sit back, relax, and have a great time.
Caribou Ranch
If the heat in Boulder proper is too much for you, drive half an hour west into the mountains for the serenity of Caribou Ranch. This open space park features aspen groves, a small waterfall, a historic mine complex, wetlands, and an old barn. Follow either the Delonde Trail or Blue Bird Loop from the parking lot for picnic tables along the way, or wander through the meadows and forests until you find the perfect secluded spot.
Lover’s Hill Park
This gem is perfect for those looking for a close getaway that is surprisingly private. This romantic park features a hidden alcove with benches, beautiful wildflowers, a picnic table, and one of the best sunset views in all of Boulder. Meet here in the early afternoon for a romantic lunch, or bring a picnic and your date to enjoy the sunset in the evening.
South Mesa Trailhead
Before the entrance to Eldorado Canyon State Park, South Mesa Trailhead awaits. The picnic tables are shaded under large cottonwood trees, making it a great place to picnic after a hike around the area or just for an afternoon getaway. Bring your pets for the afternoon, meander the many trails available from this spot, and enjoy the sounds of hummingbirds and Boulder Creek along with your picnic.
Scott Carpenter Park
This park is best for families looking to get outside and get active without wandering too far from home. Kids will love the rocketship playground, skatepark, baseball diamond, and pool. Adults will appreciate the views, location, and opportunities for activity. Bring your pets, baseball gloves, soccer balls, volleyballs, water guns and more and play all evening long until it’s time to head to one of Boulder’s many outstanding restaurants.
