What was once reserved only for students has become an annual tradition for Americans of all ages and circumstances. Spring Break. It’s that magical time of year when you don’t need an excuse to escape; you just do it. Over the years, my list of favorite Spring Break destinations has grown, but the basic requirements remain the same. The following hot spots all have three things in common: delicious food, rich culture, and breathtaking scenery.
Spring Break, Central American Style
Certain Mexican destinations have become the go-to setting for that quintessential Spring Break getaway. While Cancun is the most popular, it can become overwhelming for some. Two of my favorites are Tulum and Sayulita.
Tulum
For anyone who is looking for a smaller, quieter alternative to the other Riviera Maya resort areas, Tulum is it. That’s not to say that it’s lacking in fun or excitement, however. In addition to the usual Spring Break-style partying and libations, visitors will enjoy diving, windsurfing, exploring caves and ruins, hiking, biking, and more.
Sayulita
Similar to Tulum, Sayulita is a tamer version of the customary Mexican Spring Break experience. Of course, that is in relative terms, when compared to other popular destinations, such as Cozumel. Sayulita has a really fun surfer vibe, and it will definitely give you the high-energy escape that you’re looking for.
The Island Getaway Spring Break
Choosing a Caribbean island getaway can be a daunting task; there are way too many great options. If you want the ultimate luxury island resort vibe, however, look no further than the islands of Turks and Caicos. There are plenty of reasons to love this beachy getaway, not the least of which are endless supplies of fresh seafood and the third-largest reef system in the world. The best part is that English is the primary language, and the local currency is the U.S. dollar, which makes traveling to these islands very easy.
Spring Break the East Coast Way
If you prefer domestic travel, I have the perfect suggestion for you. Keep an open mind when you read the following words: East Coast Educational Tour. It’s not as stuffy as you may think. There’s something so special about that salty Atlantic air and the culture of the coastal cities upon which our nation was built. If you choose to spend your Spring Break in the states, plan a route that takes you through these four hot spots: Washington, DC, New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston. You can’t go wrong with daytime activities in these iconic cities, and each has a nightlife that will knock your socks off.
A Spring Break Staycation
If you are looking for something that is even closer to home, you’re in luck. We have some of the country’s top Spring Break destinations right here in our own backyard. So, if you prefer snow over sand, consider a skiing or snowboarding trip to Vail or Beaver Creek. You’ll find world-class skiing, some of the most delicious dining our state has to offer, and some of Colorado’s finest luxury accommodations.
Wherever you choose to spend your week-long escape, remember the purpose behind this American tradition. Spring Break is about renewal. Have fun, and come back feeling refreshed and ready for whatever life throws your way.
