Spring in Colorado is a beautiful time of year. However, the frost can keep coming back even when you least expect it. Because our arid state is notorious for cool mornings and evenings, it can be tricky for gardeners to get the timing right. If you’re looking forward to planting flowers this year, don’t be fooled by the warmer days we’ve been having. It’s best to wait until after Mother’s Day (May 14 this year) to plant your flowers. Here, I share why your patience will pay off, and highlight a few of my favorite nurseries and florists for stocking up on plants or fresh flowers.
Why You Should Wait Until Mid-May to Plant
When planting annuals in the Front Range, aim to get plants in the ground after the last frost has passed. That’s why mid-to-late May is generally a safe bet here in Boulder County. Being a flower gardener is a delicate balance, because you also don’t want to wait too long, or you’ll miss out on the best blooms. For best results, be diligent about checking the weather. Once it’s been about two weeks since the last frost, you should be good to go!
My Favorite Nurseries
Now, for my favorite part: the roundup of places to buy flowers! Boulder is home to several excellent nurseries and florists, so I couldn’t pick just one. Here are a few of my go-to places for all things plants:
- Terracotta. This indoor plant boutique is a fantastic local resource for nature enthusiasts! You’ll find knowledgeable gardeners and a great selection of plants here, as well as a cute coffee spot. Terracotta’s location on Pearl Street means that it’s convenient for Boulder residents to zip over and check it out. You can also order online!
- Fiori Flowers. Fiori is another awesome flower shop on Pearl Street. This shop is woman-owned and Boulder grown, so you can feel good about your purchases! Those who love elegant floral design need to explore the impressive options available from this local florist. You’ll find all kinds of treasures here, from stunning blooms to illuminating classes and programs.
- Sturtz & Copeland. This one is regularly recognized as the best florist and greenhouse in the Boulder area. Conveniently located on Arapahoe Avenue and offering beautiful arrangements, houseplants, workshops, and event floral design, Sturtz & Copeland is a go-to for many Boulder residents.
- Giambrocco & Sons Boulder Nursery. Giambrocco & Sons Garden Center is based in Arvada and has a nursery in Boulder that is well loved by our community. They are known for their excellent customer service, great pricing, and a wide variety of plants and flowers.
As the weather continues to warm up, now is the time to start thinking about your garden. Flowers can add color and visual appeal to your home, but it’s important to maximize your efforts and plant in season. If you’re thinking about starting a flower garden this year, I hope you’ll explore the many nurseries and florists here in Boulder. Our city is ripe with opportunities to learn from highly experienced gardeners and support local businesses.
