Our city is beautiful year-round, but let’s face it; it really shines in October. Between football games and carving your Halloween jack-o-lanterns, don’t forget to soak in those gorgeous fall colors, pre-winter sunshine, and crisp autumn temperatures. Here’s what we’re looking forward to this month:
Pumpkin Picking and Corn Mazes
Sure, you could grab a pumpkin during your next trip to the grocery store, but it’s so much more rewarding to pick it yourself. Drive just a few miles outside of Boulder’s city center and you’ll find a slew of farms with you-pick-it pumpkin patches and corn mazes. Here are some of our favorite farms around town:
- Cottonwood Farm (W. Corner of 75th St. and Arapahoe Rd. Boulder): In addition to pumpkins and a two-acre corn maze, don’t miss their delightful selection of fall produce, perfect for those autumn-themed recipes.
- Munson Farms (75th and Valmont, Boulder): This farm stand specializes in pumpkins and winter squash.
- Rock Creek Farm (2005 South 112th Street, Broomfield): Complete with farm animals, a corn maze, family fun area, and 120-acre pumpkin patch, this is where you’ll want to bring the family on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
- Anderson Farms (6728 County Road 3 ¼, Erie): Looking for something a bit scarier to get you in the Halloween spirit? We love Anderson Farms’ Terror in the Corn for a fun, yet spooky evening.

Where: Boulder Book Store (1107 Pearl Street)
Boulder’s largest independent bookstore teams up with CU Boulder to bring a series of Nobel Prize-winning authors from around the world to lecture this fall. October’s event will feature internationally acclaimed Japanese writer Kenzaburō Ōe. A leader in contemporary Japanese literature, he has written countless novels, short stories, and essays that examine humanity’s struggle through modernity. If you’re looking for your next good read, pick up one of his books, which will be available for sale at the event.
When: Wednesday, October 26, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Macky Auditorium
If you don’t know actor George Takei from his role as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek from 1966 to 1969, you’ll probably recognize him from his bold social media personality or the Taco Bell Quesalupa commercial. During this presentation, he’ll speak to the Boulder community and answer questions from the audience. Get your tickets beginning October 10!
Landfill Harmonic Orchestra Documentary
When: Wednesday, October 5 through Saturday, October 8
Where: Dairy Center for the Arts
In the mood for something heartwarming and a bit unconventional? Get inspired by this documentary about the Landfill Harmonic, a 20-member orchestra of kids ages 11-19, whose instruments are made entirely out of recycled trash. Along with telling their uplifting story, the documentary also highlights two of the most critical issues of our time: poverty and waste pollution. Check out the trailer here.
Downtown Boulder’s Munchkin Masquerade
When: Monday, October 31, 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.
Where: 1100 Block of Pearl St
Children ages 12 and under will appreciate this kid-friendly Halloween gathering, where they can wear their costumes and go trick-or-treating along Pearl Street.
Concerts
Most local venues are moving their concerts indoors for the season, but that doesn’t mean there will be any less to choose from! October is stacked with fun shows, including:

Month of Modern
When: Throughout the month of October
It’s no secret that we have a penchant for clean, modern design, so it should come as no surprise that our team is counting down the days until the annual Month of Modern (MoM). Presented by an impressive list of local sponsors, MoM is a four-week celebration of Colorado’s modern design, art, architecture, culture, and lifestyle. Many events are already sold out.
