The tulips have bloomed, the sun is shining, the snow has (mostly) melted—spring is a great time to be in Boulder! May is the perfect time to venture to one of the many exciting events happening in our community. Here’s what we are looking forward to this month:
When: Saturday, May 6, 2:00-8:00 p.m.
Where: Highland City Club, 885 Arapahoe Avenue
Celebrate the 143rd “Run for the Roses” at the fifth annual Boulder Lifestyle Derby Party on the lawn of the historic Highland Building and City Club in the heart of downtown Boulder. Over the last four years, the event has raised more than $40,000 for TRU Care Hospice, Attention Homes, and There With Care, and this year’s proceeds will continue to benefit these organizations. Enjoy live music, hand-rolled cigars, and gourmet food and drinks including mint juleps at Boulder’s best party of the year. Get your tickets before it sells out.
Screening of “Eero Saarinen: The Architect Who Saw the Future”
When: Tuesday, May 9, 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Boedecker Theater, Dairy Center for the Arts
Together with HMH Architecture + Interiors, I am thrilled to present an exclusive screening of the documentary, “Eero Saarinen: The Architect Who Saw the Future,” followed by a live Q&A with Eero’s daughter, Susan Saarinen. Eero was a giant in the modernist architectural world who created some of the most iconic and visionary buildings in our nation’s history. His work includes several national historic landmarks like the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the General Motors Technical Center in Michigan. He also designed New York’s TWA Flight Center at JFK International Airport, Yale University’s Ingalls Rink and Morse and Stiles Colleges, Virginia’s Dulles Airport, and modernist pedestal furniture like the Tulip chair. After his death at the age of 51 in 1961, his work continues to inspire designers, architects, and artists alike. This documentary was shot in 6K with the latest in drone technology, and provides a unique opportunity to witness a snapshot of his timeless body of work. Tickets are officially on sale, so be sure to grab yours before they sell out: http://hmhai.com/eero-saarinen/
15th Street Design District Block Party
When: Friday, May 19, 5:00-8:00 p.m.
Where: 15th Street, between Grove and Canyon
If you’ve ever wondered what goes on inside a design studio, this is your chance to find out. Boulder is home to many talented design firms, and I am thrilled to help spotlight them by sponsoring the 15th Street Design District’s annual Summer Block Party. The streets will be closed to traffic and neighborhood firms will open their doors to the public for this family- and pedestrian-friendly event. Stop in and meet the designers, learn about their work, and ask any questions you may have. There will also be plenty of food carts serving dinner and dessert, live music and performances, face painting and airbrush tattoos, prizes and giveaways, and more. There is something for all to enjoy during this fun night out on the town.
When: Saturday, May 27-Monday, May 29
Where: Downtown Boulder, from 9th Street to 14th Street between Canyon Blvd. & Arapahoe Ave
Welcome summer with one of Boulder’s favorite traditions—the Boulder Creek Festival! In its 30th year, this three-day festival is held every Memorial Day Weekend. This year’s event includes events, activities, food, and entertainment, including carnival rides and food and beverage vendors.
