Previously in my series on what’s happening in the luxury market, I’ve covered the kitchen, dining room, living room, primary suite, and guest suite. Now I’m discussing what’s desirable in the bonus room. Bonus rooms are an interesting space since they typically lack the privacy of a dedicated bedroom or office. Still, a bonus room or game room can provide a great opportunity for gathering and relaxing–so it’s important to be mindful of the design. Here’s a look at what I’m seeing more of in the bonus room or flex space:
Theater Room
A bonus room can easily sit unused if it doesn’t have a purpose. If you’re finding yourself letting your game room collect dust, it may be time for a big change. A theater area is often a coveted addition to a home, and can be valuable whether you’re planning to list soon or stay for a while. Investing in a large television, upgraded sound system, and comfortable seating can take your flex space from an unused to the most well-loved area in your home.
Home Library
Those who appreciate a classic feel will love a home library, and the bonus room may be the perfect place for it. Regardless of the size of this area, adding a bookcase (or several) can instantly take the bonus room from adrift to an anchor space in the home. With a coffee table and a cozy place to sit, it’ll be easy to gravitate toward this space.
Fireside Lounge
As mentioned in my previous posts, fireplaces can be at home in just about any room. This trend is also applicable to the bonus room, and I love seeing flexible spaces that are designed for relaxation. A fireplace lounge takes the bonus room to the next level and provides a retreat that residents and their guests are sure to enjoy.
A Scullery
Wouldn’t it be nice to have extra space for doing dishes, laundry, or storing additional kitchenware? With a scullery, you can do all of the above (and more)! If you haven’t seen one of these before, you need to know that they’re awesome. This room is typically adjacent to the main kitchen and provides extra countertop space and other useful features often found in a kitchen or laundry room. Your scullery doesn’t have to be purely utilitarian, either–I’ve seen some homeowners install an undercounter wine cooler.
Remarkable Artwork
No matter what you’re planning to do with your bonus room, artwork is a must. It’s not just a trend, and is essential in enlivening the room and making the space truly feel like home. Whether you’re interested in finding or creating a home with a game room, movie theater, home gym, or office, remarkable pieces of art will tie it all together.
Staying up to date on what’s popular in the luxury market can help you plan renovations to your home before selling, or guide you along your path of buying your dream home. Plus, it’s fun to see what’s new or coming back in modern home design. The ideas mentioned above are desirable ways to design a flex space, but there’s a lot of room for individuality.
