Boulder, Colorado is a food lover’s paradise, and one of my favorite local businesses, Food Lab, has entered the scene as an impressive culinary hub for adults and kids alike. Whether you’re taking an adult class or are looking for kids’ activities, this place is all about bringing community members together over delicious food. If you’re in need of something fun and educational for your kids to take part in this summer—all while giving you a much-needed break—Food Lab’s kids’ summer camps are just the ticket. Here’s a look at what’s coming up:
When: June 27-July 1, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
If a trip to Italy isn’t in the cards for this summer, this weeklong exploration of Italian cooking might just be the second-best thing. Kids will learn how to make their own pasta, toss their own pizza, and even learn a little bit about Italian culture and the country that’s home to so many of our favorite dishes. Buen provecho!
When: July 11-July 15, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Appreciation for Asian food goes way beyond learning to use chopsticks. This weeklong camp teaches kids all about traditional Asian cuisine and also touches on table manners and etiquette. Kids will even learn how to roll their own sushi and try Ramen noodle soup, an Asian twist on chicken noodle soup. Yum!
When: July 18-July 22, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Can’t keep your kiddos away from the cookie dough? In this series, kids will expand their baking repertoire beyond cookies, brownies, and cakes to include more nourishing dishes like homemade granola and breads made with seasonal local produce. Don’t worry; they will still come home with some sweet treats, though we can’t guarantee they’ll want to share!
All classes are for kids ages 6-12; classes will be split up by age and skill level.
Besides keeping your kids entertained during the summer months, Food Lab also offer two eight-week after-school series (one on Mondays and one on Tuesdays) from September to November. These workshops walk through the fundamentals of nutrition and cooking, teach kitchen manners and etiquette, and most importantly, get kids excited about cooking so they’re ready to take over dinner duty for you once in a while. The series culminates with a final session where kids choose, prepare, and serve you a meal. Not having to make dinner on a weeknight…what could be better than that?
