Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA) was founded in 1972 by local artists. This museum has earned its place as one of the premier venues in Colorado for art exploration and appreciation. Located in downtown Boulder, BMoCA offers several exhibitions each year, in addition to providing enriching programs for the community. If you’d like to support the museum and examine thought-provoking works of contemporary art, consider visiting one of the upcoming exhibitions:
Christina Battle: Notes to Self
From October 8-25, 2020, BMoCA Present Box will feature Notes to Self by Christina Battle. Her work invites the audience to reflect on the multi-dimensional nature of conversation and consider how each of our seemingly small actions can create societal change. This exhibition is especially timely as we enter election season, as each personal choice and action will have an effect on our collective direction. Through her artwork, Battle asks us to challenge our individual experiences and imagine a diverse, progressive future made possible through personal responsibility and engagement.
Nyeema Morgan: THE STEM. THE FLOWER. THE ROOT. THE SEED.
Nyeema Morgan is based in Chicago and specializes in examining philosophical conflicts in our everyday encounters with the world around us. THE STEM. THE FLOWER. THE ROOT. THE SEED. is available until January 17, 2021 and explores the dichotomies of gender and power through mixed-media works. Morgan’s work serves to spark discourse on reproduction, self-representation, and the complexities of womanhood. This exhibition is the second of three exhibitions at BMoCA that honors the hundredth anniversary of women gaining the right to vote in the United States.
Shark’s Ink: The California Crew (by a Collaboration of Artists)
Shark’s Ink: The California Crew will be at BMoCA at Frasier from October 26, 2020 to January 10, 2021. A collaboration of master printer Bud Shark and 14 California-based artists, these works have been in progress for decades. The prints encapsulate different styles, backgrounds, view points, and more. Artwork featured in the prints of Bud Shark include works by Brad Brown, Enrique Chagoya, Roy De Forest, Amy Ellingson, Susan Hall, Don Ed Hardy, Mildred Howard, Robert Hudson, Hung Liu, Kara Maria, Rex Ray, Alison Saar, Italo Scanga, and William T. Wiley.
John Torreano: The Big Picture–Painting From the Universe
Until January 17, 2021, John Torreano’s abstract works inspired by the universe will be on display at the main BMoCA venue. These awe-inspiring paintings and drawings invite us to ponder the complexities of the cosmos with a mix of abstraction and realism. The works are created with a multitude of materials, including plastic jewels that the artist collected from Canal Street in New York City in the 1970s. These seemingly simple, everyday objects are filled with movement and energy, leading visitors to ponder the depths of the universe.
