
The first few snow falls have dusted Boulder’s beautiful Flatirons with picturesque pockets of white, signaling that winter is finally upon us. This December, our bustling city is gearing up to host a number of events both indoors and outside. Boulderites may get a jump start on holiday shopping, warm their bones with a brisk foot race, or dive head-first into our city’s spectacular art scene. Here is a sampling of awesome events happening throughout Boulder this December.
A Broadway Christmas Carol
When: Now through 12/8, various times
Where: University Theatre
We’re so excited to watch this musical, created by Kathy Feininger. In this satirical mash-up of Dickens with Broadway, his famous holiday tale, A Christmas Carol, gets roasted. This event is perfect for both young and old at heart and will get you right into the holiday spirit.
Boulder Ballet’s The Nutcracker
When: 12/1-2, various times
Where: Various locations
This is one of Colorado’s major productions of the holiday tradition, with a cast of over 80 dancers. The performance features charming young student dancers, a full live orchestra, spectacular scenery and special effects.
Holiday Pop Up
When: 12/7 & 8, 12/14 & 15, 12 – 5 pm
Where: Artist Alley, NoBo Arts District
For two full weekends this December, a group of our community’s artists have joined forces to host a pop up holiday market. From gorgeous, handmade textiles to unique jewelry, this holiday market is unlike any other. Buy your loved ones something special and support our city’s vibrant arts scene at this North Boulder pop up market.
ColderBOLDER
When: 12/7, various start times
Where: Balch Fieldhouse through downtown
What is probably the second most anticipated 5K in Boulder, following its springtime counterpart the BOLDERBoulder, this foot race starts at CU’s Balch Fieldhouse and winds its way through downtown. Spectators have just as much fun as runners, if not more. Cheer on the runners to keep their spirits high, or volunteer to ensure this beloved event goes off without a hitch.
Lights of December Parade
When: 12/7, 6 pm
Where: Pearl Street Mall
This exciting annual parade is back again and it is larger than ever. A procession of festive floats created by local businesses, community groups, and non-profits will start at 15th and Walnut, heading west to Broadway. Bring blankets, hot chocolate, and camp chairs, and position yourself along the parade route for a truly spectacular holiday activity.
CU Boulder’s Holiday Festival 2019
When: 12/6-12/8, various times
Where: Macky Auditorium
Delight in the twinkling lights, seasonal greenery and beautiful music at CU Boulder’s Holiday Festival, an annual tradition that’s enchanting for all ages. The decades-old celebration brings together student choirs, bands and orchestras, along with world-class faculty performers, for a concert of holiday favorites and new surprises.
SPARK! Tours for Individuals with Memory Loss
When: 12/13, 10 am – 12 pm
Where: Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art
SPARK! offers a series of programs designed to cater to those with memory loss. Trained and knowledgeable docents lead individuals and their families or caregivers through curated exhibits. This safe and inviting space provides a calm setting in which folkswith early to mid-stage memory loss can experience and enjoy art.
The Blind Cafe: Social Impact & Music in the Dark Experience
When: 12/14, 5 pm
Where: The Dairy Center for Performing Arts
This award-winning event offers guests the opportunity to engage in a sensory experience unlike any other; participants will dine, discuss, and listen to music in complete darkness. This activity attempts to break down our social barriers by providing a delicious, communal dinner hosted by renowned chefs and accompanied by discussion driven by Lead Blind Ambassadors. The Blind Cafe believes that by eliminating sight, we can operate free of visual barriers, preconceived notions, and stigmas, allowing ourselves to be present for a variety of sensory activities like music, food, and conversation.
Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, a Celtic Family Christmas

The holidays truly become a family affair when married duo Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, two of the globe’s best and brightest fiddle players, invite their children onstage for an unforgettable night of holiday fun. This musical event is fit for all ages.
Our beautiful town comes alive during the holiday season. Historic Pearl Street turns into a winter wonderland covered in twinkling lights.
