If you’re new to Boulder or haven’t had the chance to enjoy the Dairy Arts Center yet, it’s a must on the mile-long list of things to do and see in our great city. The Dairy has been a mainstay in Boulder since its founding in 1992 and serves as an important creative outlet for local artists and those who appreciate artistic expression in all its forms. Thinking about catching a show there this fall? Here’s a quick look at the Dairy’s fall programming:
White Balls on Walls
White Balls on Walls will be showing at the Boedecker Theater from August 30-September 2. This film explores art history, and particularly, the fact that white men have enjoyed the most prestige in the art world. In 2019 as director Sarah Vos began working on this documentary, she noted that 90 percent of work at the Stedelijk was created by white men. The museum director agrees that this should change, but the task is no simple feat. In White Balls on Walls, the audience can embark on a behind-the-scenes experience at the Stedelijk as nuanced questions are raised and a new perspective on art history is offered.
The Tempest
The Upstart Crow Theatre Company has been a staple in Boulder for more than 40 years. If you’ve never seen a performance by The Upstart Crow, now is your chance! This theater company is presenting William Shakespeare’s The Tempest at the Carsen Theater from September 7-17. This play is one of Shakespeare’s most famous works, and it’s sure to be a compelling show.
Hot Mess
Dance can be one of the most engaging forms of art, and Hot Mess presented by New Breed Dance Company is especially captivating. This dance performance explores the feminine experience in all its glory and features the talents of 30 diverse women. Go along on the journey through joy, grief, change, and resilience as you revel in the hot mess of the human experience.
The Black Opry Revue Tour
On October 20 at 7:30 pm, Musical Vanguards at the Dairy presents Black Opry. Black Opry is home for Black artists, fans, and industry professionals who are part of the country, Americana, and folk, as well as blues genres. Black artists have had a significant impact and influence on these genres, yet have often been overlooked and excluded. Black Opry seeks to change this and invites Boulder to enjoy the diversity of sound that Black artists bring to these genres. The Black Opry Revue Tour at Gordon Gamm Theater will feature performances by Ally Free, Jett Holden, Destinie Lynn, and Ben Jordan.
The Dairy Arts Center is a gem that we’re fortunate to have in our city. This organization brings incredible art to our residents year round, and there’s always something thought-provoking or awe-inspiring happening in its theaters. The programs highlighted here are just a quick snapshot of what’s going on this fall, so be sure to check out the full calendar for more options.
