Calling all cyclists interested in competing against the best of the best in the Front Range: one of the largest International Cycling Union events in the West is coming to Boulder this October. The US Open of Cyclocross is being held in Valmont Bike Park on October 15-16, 2016, and the race features separate divisions for juniors, amateurs, and professional cyclocross racers. This event will showcase the best riders in Colorado, and they will all be competing for the chance to be named the next US Open Champion. The day is sure to be just as exciting for spectators as it is for those who participate. Here’s what you need to know:
So What is Cyclocross, Anyway?
It’s a form of bicycle racing that typically takes place in the autumn and winter. Races are known for a variety of different courses including pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills, and challenges where the rider must dismount and carry their bike while avoiding obstacles.
Saturday, Day 1
The first day of racing begins at Valmont Bike Park, one of the most well-known cycling tracks in the country. Get ready for plenty of sand pits, hill climbs, and run-ups to get your adrenaline pumping!
Under 18 Racers
Day 1 is competition day for cyclists aged 18 and under, and it will be the first official International Cycling Union Junior race ever held in Colorado. This is a such an exciting opportunity for young riders to develop their skills and pick up some tips from the pros, all while watching the best junior cyclists from the Front Range.
For friends and families who come to cheer and support the riders, there is plenty of fun to be had, too! There will be food vendors, beer from Ska Brewing, and a kids zone with inflatables to enjoy. For the cycling enthusiasts in the crowd, there will be a cyclocross expo on site, as well.
Sunday, Day 2
The excitement continues on Sunday for Day 2, when races will be open to both amateurs and professionals. Riders and fans will get their first look at a brand-new course. If you’re a Boulder resident and love to ride, this is your chance to see the new course right in your own neighborhood. Come see the new track, and stay to watch world-class cyclists ride it.
Don’t worry…Sunday will have the same perks and goodies as Saturday. Take the kids, and get ready to cheer for your friends and family!
