Boulder County is home to over 855 farms spanning nearly 150,000 acres of land, according to the 2012 Census of Agriculture. With so many farms – particularly those catering to traditional agriculture and a family-friendly environment, there is no shortage of corn mazes to choose from. Here, we list some of the most challenging, exciting, picturesque, and even scary corn mazes Boulder has in store:
Cottonwood Farm offers a pumpkin patch, farm animals, farm equipment on display, and of course, a beautiful cornfield maze and straw bale maze for the kids. Their traditional corn maze sprawls over two acres and “provides the real feel of being on the farm.” What makes this maze special is how it’s designed and created: no tractors are used, but instead each path is cut by hand, allowing the paths to be narrower and all encompassing. Cottonwood Farm invites you to “hear how the corn mutes the sounds of the outside world [and] let your little ones lead the way as you try to find the exit”. Open from September 23 – October 31 every day, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Cottonwood Farm’s corn maze is one well worth visiting (perhaps more than just once).
Isabelle Farm Fall Harvest Festival
From September 30 – October 31, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., weekends only, head to Isabelle farm and enjoy the fall season with some help from their Fall Harvest Festival. In addition to fall staples such as pumpkin patches and hayrides, Isabelle Farm has a must-see three-acre corn maze, in addition to two straw bale mazes (one for toddlers and another for children ages 3-8). Engulfed by beauty, vistas of sunflowers and a laid-back country setting make this “one of Boulder County’s most picturesque [fall farms].”
Munson Farms is a Boulder staple. Family owned and operated for 40 years just 10 minutes from the City of Boulder, Munson Farms offers a true Boulder farm experience. While they grow and sell over 30 types of heirloom pumpkins and winter squash, they also offer an impeccable (and expansive) five-acre corn maze. If a challenge is what you’re looking for, stop by this corn maze and test your orienteering prowess. The farm is open to all until November 1, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. On Sunday, the farm closes at 6:00 p.m., so there are plenty of chances for you to see it for yourself.
Anderson Farms has the special designation as home to Colorado’s longest-running Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch. In the many years they’ve been crafting their annual tradition, they’ve turned corn mazes into a truly immersive experience for every type of maze-explorer. If tame and quiet corn mazes don’t spark your interest, Anderson Farms has you covered with their truly frightful “Terror In The Corn” maze. If terror isn’t up your ally, they are also host to a giant, 30-acre corn maze with over eight miles of paths to wander. A previous winner of Best Maze Design from the North American Farmers’ Direct Marketing Association and four years of placing in the top three, you can be assured that Anderson Farms’ corn mazes will not disappoint.
Fall Harvest Festival at Miller Farms
While not Colorado’s longest-running corn maze and pumpkin patch, Miller Farms is no stranger to tradition. This year will be the their 20th Fall Harvest Festival, and they have big plans. Not only will you have the opportunity to take a tractor ride way out into their fields, picking your very own fall produce as you go, but you’ll also be able to get lost in their corn maze, make a few friends at their petting zoo, and admire their collection of antique vehicles – from fire engines to century-old tractors and everything in between. Their open aired Antique Alley is the perfect complement to the dizzying disorientation of their formidable corn maze and is fun for both kids, as well as the well-traveled antique enthusiast in your family. Enjoy the Festival from Labor Day until mid-November, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. daily.
Regardless of the farm you pick, it’s hard to go wrong when searching for a corn maze in the Boulder area. From quaint to frightful, expansive to petit, there’s a maze for everyone – and hopefully you find the perfect farm for you from our list above.
