You may already frequent independent stores and restaurants to give the local economy a boost…but what about your produce? Many of us don’t consider how the thousands of miles our food has to travel to get to our plates impacts the environment. Luckily, Boulder is home to plenty of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), partnerships between farmers and consumers where you buy a share of a farmer’s yield for a season and reap the benefits in the form of a weekly supply of fresh, organic produce. Here’s our list of CSAs in Boulder to check out:
63rd Street Farm
3796 63rd St., Boulder, CO 80301
For 23 weeks from June through November, CSA members at 63rd Street Farm receive organic, fresh vegetables grown on their farm just 10 minutes outside downtown Boulder. You can choose between a full (feeds 3-5 people) or half (feeds 2-3 people) CSA veggie share, depending on the size of your household. Additionally, 63rd Street Farm partners with other local farms and vendors to offers its members interesting add-ons, including pork, beef, chicken, lamb, fish, dairy, coffee, honey, wine, and body care.
Frog Belly Farm
5255 Rogers Rd, Longmont, CO 80503
Frog Belly Farm offers its CSA members shares of organic fruit, grass-fed beef, goat, and pork, eggs, and organic skin care. Worthy of note, the farm uses only organic and biodynamic methods and employs biological farming techniques to manage pests. Frog Belly is committed to connecting you with the origin of their food, and is a great place to take the littles for fun programs, summer camps, or a tour of the farm.
Cure Organic Farm
7416 Valmont Road, Boulder, CO 80301
Situated on 15 acres just six miles east of Boulder, Cure Organic Farm grows over 100 different varieties of certified organic vegetables, herbs, and flowers. The farm feeds 200 families each week and offers fruit, vegetables, eggs, flower, coffee, and bread shares. The coolest part? All of its crops are distributed within 50 miles of its location, through the CSA program and to local restaurants, farmers’ markets, and its on-site farm store. Talk about nourishing the community!
Cultiva
1630 Hawthorn Ave, Boulder, CO 80304
Cultiva’s organic vegetables, fruits, mushrooms, and free range eggs do more than just taste delicious—they also help teach teens leadership and business skills. As a youth-operated organic farm, every CSA share purchased supports the farm’s Cultiva Youth Project, which hires teens to engage in meaningful work on the farm for the summer. Cultiva’s CSA members pick up their shares from the farm every week for 22 weeks, providing a glimpse into the evolution of the crops throughout the season. .
Red Wagon Organic Farm
7694 North 63rd Street, Longmont, CO 80503
For 23 weeks (May-October), Red Wagon Organic Farms’ CSA members receive a selection of vegetables grown on the farm. For those hesitant to take the plunge into weekly produce deliveries (we get it, that’s potential for a lot of wasted food), Red Wagon offers biweekly veggie shares in addition to weekly ones. Perfect for families with picky eaters, Red Wagon strives to provide a balance of familiar crops like beans, tomatoes, and melons while expanding your palate with lesser-known goodies (c’mon, you know you’ve always wanted to learn how to cook salsify).
There you have it—some of Boulder County’s best CSAs. If you’re interested in taking part in a CSA this summer, there may still be time. Contact the farms directly for more information.
