Boulder County is home to a robust luxury housing market. While our city and the surrounding areas offer an impressive set of perks for residents, there’s no question that housing costs are on the rise. Affordable housing options are increasingly difficult to find in our county, and many households pay upwards of 30% of their income on their rent or mortgage payment. In an effort to bring more affordable housing options to Boulder County, the Home Wanted initiative was founded in 2016 by the Boulder County Regional Housing Partnership. This organization is spearheaded by nine jurisdictions in Boulder County and is overseen by the Boulder County Consortium of Cities. Interested in learning more about this organization? Here’s what you need to know about the important work of Home Wanted:
The Mission of Home Wanted
The Home Wanted organization recognizes that a healthy community begins with affordable, safe, and accessible housing. Quality housing has a direct, positive effect on all aspects of public health, including educational equity and economic justice. Home Wanted aims to bring more affordable housing options to our Colorado communities to improve the collective well-being of Boulder County.
Boulder County has ambitious plans to ensure that 12% of the housing market will be permanently affordable to low, middle, and moderate-income households by 2035. This translates into adding 800 affordable homes per year for the next 15 years. The goal is to achieve this objective through a combination of new construction, acquisition, and redevelopment. The organization would also love to hear your story about what home means. Opening a dialogue helps us make connections with each other and sparks creativity that’s necessary to find solutions to complex problems. Would you like to share your story? You can do so here!
As Boulder residents are being strongly encouraged to stay home to fight the spread of COVID-19, we are being reminded of the importance of having a stable and safe home where we can take refuge. Home Wanted is inviting everyone to share what being Home Together means to you and your loved ones. By contributing to this community magazine through art, recipes, photos, stories and interviews, you can assist in bringing our wonderful community together during this difficult time. Visit the Call for Submissions page to learn more.
I’m excited to participate in the Home Wanted initiative to create a more inclusive Boulder County. If you’d like to join us in the mission, please take action within your community to help our county advance this endeavor.
