Happily for us, our country is a melting pot of nationalities, giving us the opportunity to experience a variety of foods, customs, religions, and holidays without ever leaving our backyard, including Cinco de Mayo. In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo comes and goes without much fanfare. Schools get the day off, but parties do not rage all night like they can here. Cinco de Mayo marks the date that the Mexican army defeated French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Even though this victory did not permanently end French occupation, it was considered a major turning point in Mexico’s war against France.
The US celebration of Cinco de Mayo was first held in Southern California in 1863 as a symbol of solidarity with Mexico against French occupation and rule. Cinco de Mayo is more than just an excuse to dig into spicy tacos and kick back a few Mexican beers. It’s a way to celebrate Mexico’s strength, perseverance, and the nation’s commitment to preservation of their land and culture. Below, we’ve highlighted a few of our favorite Cinco de Mayo celebrations around Boulder this year.
