Outdoor cinemas are a summertime staple in many cities across the country, and Boulder is no exception. Our outdoor theater opened in 1995, and in the 20 years since its debut, Boulder Outdoor Cinema has welcomed summer audiences to enjoy countless films in a pop-up venue Downtown. I’m positive that this year will be just as special as all of the years past, so I would definitely encourage you to head out for a show or two before the end of summer. Whether you’re a seasoned outdoor movie enthusiast or just checking it out for the first time, here’s what you need to know about the 2015 season:
Location
Movies are shown on a large projection screen in a parking lot behind the Dushanbe Teahouse, which is located on 13th between Canyon and Arapahoe. BOC recently bought a new, high-quality inflatable screen to set up at the venue. The space can hold several hundred people, but guests should bring their own low-slung lawn chairs, floor cushions, beanbags, or blankets for seating.
The theater is open to all and is easily accessible, with nearby public parking at Boulder High, and plenty of bike racks.
Tickets & Dining Options
In addition to its convenient location, BOC is also the most affordable movie venue in town. Tickets are donation-based, thanks to the theater’s local sponsors, which include the Daily Camera, Alfalfa’s, and The Brand Chefs/Mighty Fudge Studios. Tickets are purchased at the gate, and suggested entry-fees are $5 for adults and $3 for children. The theater opens at 7pm and pre-show entertainment starts at 7:30pm, which usually includes musical performances, short films, and trivia games. Movies begin at sunset, sometime around 8:30 – 9pm.
Food and drinks are permitted at BOC and the venue offers a frozen banana vendor, a smoothie bar, and a classic concession stand. Movie-goers will also find a variety of local food trucks parked around the theater every week.
2015 Film Schedule
Each year, Boulder Outdoor Cinema creates an eclectic schedule of movies, featuring cult classics and new hits.
