The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art is our community’s window into the ever-changing world of modern art. This fall, the museum will help coordinate and host the third annual A History of Visual Arts in Boulder, also known as HOVAB. HOVAB celebrates the city’s visual arts past, beginning in the late 19th century and working its way toward the present. BMoCA will be holding four exhibits from September through January, including the opening celebration. We’ve put together a cheat sheet for these exhibits to help you get the most out of this year’s HOVAB.
The HOVAB Launch

The Boulder artistic community will come together to kick off this year’s HOVAB, with a number of notable artists in attendance. Design, photography, painting, and more will be on display during this free exhibit for the public.
HOVAB @ BMoCA: Evolving Visions of Land and Landscape
When: September 29 through January 15
Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Sunday: 11:00am until 5:00pm. Saturday from 9:00am until 5:00pm. during the Boulder County Farmers’ Market.

This event will run concurrently with the HOVAB launch, and will feature many of the same artists. On display, visitors will find works depicting natural landscapes.
Visiting Artists to the University of Colorado-Boulder from the 1940s to the Present
When: September 29 through January 15

As a complement to the Evolving Visions of Land and Landscape exhibit, the University of Colorado-Boulder Center for Humanities and Arts and the University of Colorado-Boulder Art and Art History Department Visiting Artist Program have collaborated on the production of this exhibit, which details the works of artists visiting our town’s historic university. It promises to take visitors on a trip of CU Boulder’s artistic history, starting in the 1940s, and ending in present day.
HOVAB @ BMoCA Present Box: Home-Contemporary Indigenous Artists Responding
When: November 8 through November 20

Native American heritage is very strong in Boulder and the surrounding areas. This exhibit showcases indigenous artists and their portrayal of the realities the native people in this region face. Visitors will be offered a glimpse into the past and a look at the present condition of Native American life.
In addition to these four exhibits at BMoCA, HOVAB will be offering a number of one-day events at the museum. The entire celebration is a great way to get involved with the community arts scene and support local artists, as well those who are visiting us from afar.
