January unfolds with an array of engaging events and activities you’ll want to put on your calendar. As the new year commences, Boulder’s vibrant cultural scene comes to life, offering art exhibitions, outdoor adventures, community gatherings, and more. Embrace our city’s wintertime glory and ring in the new year with these awesome January events.
When: 1/5, 5:00 pm
Where: Boulder Theater
Join our city’s residents and music lovers for a public benefit concert and birthday bash hosted at the Boulder Theater. A few of our city’s most noteworthy bands, like Jane & Matthews and Foggy Mountain Spaceship will take the stage at this free event to celebrate a beloved Boulder resident’s 50th while raising awareness for a Niwot nonprofit, Mwebaza (mWAY-bah-zah), that teaches children how to become advocates for change in their communities. Don’t miss celebrating the first Friday of the new year with this goodwill event.
When: 1/11, 5:30 – 7:00
Join the excellent community affiliated with the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art for a drag performance like no other. Homecoming Queens doesn’t just provide an awesome evening of entertainment and glamor but explores the notion of identity, home, and belonging, as well. This event responds to the work of Ále Campos and Rory Scott’s current exhibition: MediaLive: Technology as Healing. Dress up and bring your friends for a fun and special experience in town.
SCAPES Opening Night
When: 1/12, 5:00 pm
Where: The Dairy
Be one of the first to witness this epic art exhibit, SCAPES. This visual display features work by Richard Eisen, David Hollander, Molly Kaderka, and Pam Rogers and explores the various “scapes” we have come to know intimately and not-so-intimately. Scape refers to many things: a long flowerless stem that extends from the bulb of a plant, the antennae of an insect, the shaft of a singular bird feather, and a landscape. This exhibit meets somewhere in the middle of all of these things, exploring what’s in front of our eyes and underneath our feet.
20-Hour Yin Training
When: 1/19 – 1/21
Where: Yoga Pearl
If you resolve to try something different in the new year or recommit to your physical and mental health, this 20-hour Yin Yoga training is perfect. Spend a long weekend at the beautiful Yoga Pearl studio with Tucker Shelton learning more about the restorative practice of Yin Yoga. Dive deep into the chakras, explore postures, and learn more about the philosophy behind this practice.
Nick Forster’s Hippy Bluegrass Church
When: 1/21, 10:30 – 12:00
Where: eTown Hall
Nick Forster is the man when it comes to bringing people together through music and celebration. For 30 years, he has hosted eTown and for 41 years, he was a member of Hot Rize. Nick knows that people need community and to come together in positive and friendly spaces, so he’s offering his own “guilt-free gospel” to the folks of Boulder. Sing-alongs, poetry and story-telling round out Hippy Bluegrass Church.
January is chalked full of activities to help shape this new year into a noteworthy one. From personal exploration to community connection, each of these events is sure to inspire, provoke, and continue rounding out perspectives and beliefs. Don’t miss out.
