Indigenous Peoples Day takes place on the second Monday of October each year. In 2024, Indigenous Peoples Day occurs on October 14th. If you’d like to observe this day respectfully, there are many opportunities in Boulder. Here are some ways to honor the cultures and histories of the original inhabitants of North America:
Acknowledge the Indigenous Lands You’re On
The land we now know as Colorado has been home to indigenous people since immemorial. The City of Boulder has developed a staff land acknowledgment with guidance and feedback from American Indian Tribal Nations, which I encourage you to explore. You can read more about this project on Indigenous Peoples Day (and beyond) and acknowledge that our city lies on unceded Indigenous territory. Take time to reflect on this fact before moving on to the other ideas on this list.
Participate in Educational and Cultural Events
Explore educational events in your area if you’d like to learn more about Indigenous culture and activism. In Boulder, we’re fortunate to have access to many events to honor this important day. If you’re local to Boulder, here are a few gatherings you may want to explore:
- Indigenous Peoples Day: Solidarity Economy, Degrowth, and Climate Justice. This event occurs on October 12th at 10:30 am at Boulder Public Library. At this gathering, participants will join Luna Cultura to learn about Solidarity Economy and Climate Justice through art, poetry, music, and collective learning. Please register here if you’re interested in attending.
- Mi Chantli Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration. On October 13th, Mi Chantli invites you to attend an Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration at the studio. During this gathering, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about a variety of Native American traditions. The event begins with opening songs and includes language workshops, dance performances, an intro to tamale making, and more. Registration isn’t required, so stop by between 12:00 pm and 4:45 pm.
- Indigenous Peoples Day 2024 at the Dairy Arts Center. Right Relationship Boulder is hosting an educational event at the Dairy Arts Center on October 13th from 12:30 to 5:30 pm. The discussion begins at the Gordon Gamm Theater with a welcoming address by Jerilyn DeCoteau (Turtle Mountain Chippewa). Throughout the rest of the afternoon, participants will hear perspectives, insight, and history from guest speakers and enjoy a demonstration of indigenous dances by Rocky Mountain Indigenous Dancers. Tickets are available here.
If you’d like to observe Indigenous Peoples Day, Boulder has plenty of opportunities to participate. From celebrations to educational gatherings, you’ll certainly be able to find a way to honor the histories and cultures of American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians.
