Named a “Top 10 Winter Town” by National Geographic, Boulder offers an endless supply of things to do, even when the weather gets chilly. During the fall and winter, you could be biking and hiking in 60-degree weather one day and strapping on your ski boots or snowshoes on other days. Whether you are dropping in for a visit or call Boulder home, here are our must-do activities in our city during the cooler months:
Explore the Outdoors
No list of things to do in Boulder, regardless of the time of the year, would be complete without a mention of the city’s plethora of outdoor offerings. With more than 145 miles of trails, you’ll see hikers and trail runners year-round, but we’re partial to the views of the snow-dusted Flatirons during the winter months. Local spots, like Chautauqua Park and Mount Sanitas, are popular for hiking and snowshoeing. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even skate ski at North Boulder Park or explore the backcountry at places like the nearby Eldora Mountain Resort, Eldorado Canyon State Park, or Indian Peaks Wilderness. Eldora Mountain Resort also offers Women’s Days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the season. These lesson programs are a great way for women to improve together and share their passion for winter sports.
Whether you choose to snowshoe, hike, or stroll, take advantage of the many free guided hikes offered by the city of Boulder. Bring your binoculars, because you’re bound to spot winter birds, deer, and animal tracks in the snow.
Shop ‘Til You Drop
Boulder is home to some outstanding independent shops where you can find everything ranging from handmade soaps to fine jewelry to artisanal cheeses. Soak in the winter sunshine while getting your daily exercise by visiting one of Boulder’s outdoor shopping areas, including the beloved Pearl Street Mall and the walkable Twenty Ninth Street shopping center.
Admire the Fall Colors
Observing the changing fall colors is one of our favorite autumn pastimes, and our city offers plenty of spots to walk and take in the beauty. Stroll the gorgeous downtown Mapleton Historic District, which comes alive with color along its tree-lined streets. The south end of the Mesa Trail and the Wonderland Lake loop are also great local options to get your fall fix.
Tour Local Wineries and Distilleries
There will inevitably be some days when the cooler temperatures prompt you to stay inside, and nothing warms you up faster than a glass of Colorado-made wine and cocktails. Boulder houses five wineries and four distilleries, many of which offer free tours with tasting. Don’t miss Bookcliff Vineyards, Settembre Cellars, and Decadent Saint, a trio of local wineries in in north Boulder collectively known as the Wine Studio. The expert staff at Boulder Wine Merchant will teach you everything you need to know about wines in their Wine Education Classes and tastings. Plus, their upcoming Boulder Burgundy Festival (October 20-23, 2016) is the place to be for everyone from master sommeliers to wine enthusiasts.
Ready for something stronger? J&L Distilling, Vapor Distillery, and Geek Spirits are all excellent choices for an afternoon of fun and libations.
