In and around Boulder, there’s an abundance of activities that are ideal for the family – our city and its surrounding areas provide opportunities for families to share amazing experiences, across the board. With something to do for every age, taking advantage of local family-fun is easy.
Here’s a list of the top family activities that you should try this year:
Located on the University of Colorado Boulder campus, Fiske Planetarium is truly out of this world. For families and amateur star seekers alike, this venue has a lot to offer. Escape to another world with its high-powered star shows, or attend other unique events, like the yearly Full Dome Film Festival.
Valmont Bike Park
With over 40 acres of natural terrain trails, the Valmont Bike Park provides family members of all ages with things to do. The park is designed to be accessible to riders of varying abilities, and has fun summer programs to keep the kids active. Amenities include family and cross country trails, cyclocross courses, a slope style terrain park, dirt jumps, a dual slalom racecourse, two pump parks, and a younger kids bike play area. Visitors can stop by for one of the many “Bike-in” movies the location offers, and pet owners can take advantage of the nearby dog park.
Boulder History Museum
Founded in 1944 as the “Boulder Historical Society,” the Boulder History Museum has been a mainstay in the city. Located in a local landmark, the Harbeck-Bergheim house, the organization prides itself in telling Boulder’s story. Exhibits are switched out 2-3 times a year, so guests will always enjoy seeing something new. The current showcase educates visitors on Chief Niwot, the famous Native American leader from the area. In addition to public visits, the Boulder History Museum has many interesting kids programs, including educational camps this fall for when school’s out.
Gateway Fun Park
A family wonderland, the Gateway Fun Park boasts an impressive array of attractions. Whether it’s the mini golf or the go karts, there’s never a dull moment. Used for anything from children’s birthday parties to corporate team building, this activity hotspot provides fun for all ages. Being Colorado’s only indoor/outdoor family fun center to be open year round is also an added benefit. Aside from the previously mentioned amenities, the park also has a gaming arcade, batting cages, a maze, and a driving range – and is open pretty late, in case your schedule is too busy to go earlier in the day.
Peanut Butter Players
Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Peanut Butter Players children’s theatre is the perfect entertainment choice for families – especially those with younger children. In addition to its plays, the organization also provides singing, dancing, and acting lessons for kids. Originally founded in Detroit, with a handful of elite actors aged 8-16, the Peanut Butter Players were highly acclaimed throughout Michigan. The troupe moved to Boulder when founder Jo Anne Lamun decided to start the next chapter of her life in Colorado.
Boulder Public Library
Reading with family members is the perfect way to bond while encouraging children to become excited to learn. Spark a curiosity in them that could one day change the world, or just sit down and enjoy your favorite story. In addition to checking out reading material, the Boulder Public Library provides many fun classes and activities, including a phenomenal kids program. Also part of the schedule are “read-aloud time” and special reading buddy programs. Book clubs and other events provide great hobbies for older family members. This Boulder favorite has something for all reading levels, and is sure to become a consistent location for quality family time.
WOW! Children’s Museum
With many science, art, and cultural activities to choose from, the World of Wonder! (WOW!) Children’s Museum is dedicated to educating kids while providing a safe, fun environment. Visitors can explore exhibits like “Pirate Ships & Lighthouses” and “SunSational Energy & Science.” There are even summer programs aimed at encouraging lifelong learning. The building can easily accommodate birthday parties, and is a unique and memorable choice for any child’s celebration.
Home to over 5,000 animals, the Butterfly Pavilion is essential for any family with aspiring young adventurers. The entire facility is focused on showcasing the often-overlooked smaller creatures in life. As the name would suggest, the fan-favorite is the 1000+ butterflies that own the skies above their tropical rain forest exhibit. The pavilion has opportunities for kids to hold Rosie the Tarantula, and is great for group educational tours. An aquatic center, insect area, and outdoor wildlife exploration garden, each full of its own diverse array of life, round out the visitor experience.
