Each year, Hanukkah arrives just in time for the days to grow shorter. This Jewish Festival of Lights celebrates a historic military win and a miraculous appearance of oil for the Temple. The 8-day festival celebrates a hopefulness that light provides by bringing loved ones together to participate in annual, treasured traditions.
This year’s Hanukkah celebrations will be a little different due to increasing COVID-19 restrictions. However, there are ample ways to celebrate together, spread hope to those who need it most, and light the Menorah. Here are some creative ways to celebrate Hanukkah 2020 in Boulder.
(Virtual) Green Gift-Giving with Eco-Cycle
When: 12/3, 7:00 – 8:15 pm
Traditional Hanukkah celebrations involve gift giving. However, Boulder’s eco-conscious community recognizes that one of the greatest acts of consumption is the purchase of new materials and the discarding of the old. Tune in to this evening presentation and learn how you can buy and give more consciously this holiday season.
(Virtual) Cooking Class – Chanukah Applesauce
When: 12/6, 10:00 – 11:15 am
For a new take on the traditional latke recipe, grab your apron and whisk! Get online to enjoy a virtual cooking class that teaches participants how to make extraordinary applesauce, which can be added to latkes for an extra tasty bite. Farmers from Milk and Honey Farm will lead the class and guests can even make extra batches to give as gifts.
(Virtual) Community Candle Lighting
When: 12/10, 5:30 – 6:30 pm
Instead of the traditional, annual Menorah lighting on Pearl Street, this time-honored tradition is moving online so that all may still participate. Watch as Rabbi Scheiner lights the first candle and offers inspiring words about the holiday and current global climate. Light your Menorah alongside the public on Pearl Street to bring the joy of Hanukkah into your home. Stroll down Pearl Street at any time during the 8-day festival and see the Menorah in person, safe and socially distanced.
(Virtual) Farmside Hanukkah/Shabbat
When: 12/11, 10:00 am
Stay warm and cozy inside while visiting the Milk and Honey Farm, virtually! Sing songs and listen to stories that celebrate Hanukkah while learning about this awesome, local farm.
(Virtual) 2020 Hanukkah Market
Shop for artisan goods, specialty foods, and so much more at this year’s virtual Hanukkah Market. For over a month, local and national artists and makers are peddling their wares online. Browse beautiful, hand-made pottery, intricate beaded jewelry, gourmet food products, and bottled beverage selections. Those on your gift list are sure to enjoy any of these lovely offerings.
Even with social distancing guidelines and COVID-19 restrictions, there’s plenty to be thankful for and celebrate. Our community has banded together in a variety of ways to continue to support local restaurants, artists, retailers, and more. Keep the momentum going through the holiday season by partaking in any of these awesome Hanukkah events.
