Spring is the perfect time to spruce up your home’s landscaping. Whether you’re preparing to put your house on the market or just want to enhance your outdoor space, a fresh exterior façade can do wonders for the look and feel of your home. Here are spring landscaping tips to keep in mind for our town:
Think Xeriscape
Save yourself the hassle of regular watering by introducing low-maintenance desert plants to your landscape. Xeriscaping refers to landscaping designed for areas that are susceptible to drought—ideal for our dry climate in Colorado. Cacti and other succulents are all excellent choices that are extremely drought tolerant. Other popular plants that are often used to conserve water include yarrow, torch lilly, and mojave sage—all of which will look fabulous in your garden.
Experiment with Hardscaping
While “softscape” refers to the plants and other living organisms in your yard, hardscaping involves the inanimate elements of landscaping, such as masonry work or woodwork. As the name suggests, “hardscape” includes objects made of hard materials like concrete, brick, stone, wood, and metal. Popular hardscape projects include stone retaining walls, concrete patios, brick patios, stone walkways, stone steps, gravel paths, wrought-iron fences, wooden decks, and wooden arbors. Even water features in a yard, such as a stone or ceramic fountain, count as hardscape. To give hardscape a more natural, organic feel, try growing plants in and around a water feature, such as a small pond filled with water plants.
Add Rocks
Whether large or small, rocks are one of the quickest and easiest ways to add depth, texture, height, and interest to your landscape. Best of all, rocks are extremely low-maintenance, easy to find, and simple to use. Consider using small rocks to create a walkway, patio area, or ground cover, or large rocks to create points of interest in your yard or garden.
Make it Cozy
Pulling up a couple of chairs or a loveseat to an area immediately ups its coziness factor, and allows buyers to picture themselves there on a warm summer evening. Adding furniture, a side table, and a few colorful throw pillows and accents will add instant charm to your outdoor space.
When putting a home on the market, the importance of its exterior cannot be overstated. It’s the first thing buyers notice, and you want to make a positive, long-lasting impression. Even if you’re not planning to sell, a thoughtfully designed landscaped area adds appeal to your home, and is sure to provide peace and tranquility for many years to come If you are thinking about selling your home in Boulder, I would love to speak with you and guide you through the process.
