While we’re far from Louisiana’s swampy Bayou and the cacophonous Bourbon Street, we absolutely love celebrating Fat Tuesday, in true Boulder style. Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras in French, originated as a way to overindulge the day before Lent, a Catholic season of fasting. The secular, modern world honors this tradition with its own interpretation – by throwing opulent parties rich with food, drink, and revelry.
Rage like a Cajun at any of Boulder County’s awesome parties taking place throughout Mardi Gras week. Don your brightest attire, festive masks, and colorful beads before heading out for a rocking good time. Here’s what we’re most looking forward to.

Crescent City Connection plays groovy, soul-filled melodies, and is one of Colorado’s premiere New Oreleans-style bands. When it comes to filling the dance floor, this Bayou band reigns supreme. Groove the night away at one of Boulder’s best hotels with the #1 Mardi Gras party band this side of the Mississippi.
Mardi Gras

Known as one of Boulder’s best seafood joints, it’s only fitting that this Pearl Street haunt serves up an ocean feast in celebration of Fat Tuesday. Indulge in delicious, amazing dishes like jambalaya, chargrilled oysters, and seafood gumbo while sipping on a sweet and tangy Hurricane. Sway to easy jazz music before topping off an incredible meal with a decadent dessert of King Cake beignets.
Fat Tuesday with Mama Roux and the Music of New Orleans

Mama Roux returns to The Dairy again in celebration of Fat Tuesday. Spend cocktail hour with Felonius Smith Trio in the lobby and enjoy themed drinks and small bites. Transition into the elegant Gordon Gamm Theater for an inspiring performance of soulful, New Orleans-style music. Featured Denver artists include Jon Gray, Jeff Jenkins, and Dan Schwindt, among others. This popular event sells out quickly so purchase your ticket soon.
Mardi Gras with Defunkt Railroad
When: 2/25, 9:00 pm – 12:00 am
Where: The Dark Horse
This local watering hole is a Boulder staple. Known for its eclectic decor, greasy food, and rowdy atmosphere, The Dark Horse proves the perfect spot to celebrate an evening of excess. DeFunkt Railroad is sure to kick things up a notch with its own style of New Orleans funk. Its groovy music blends Zydeco, Blues, and Jazz to make an irresistible sound. You can’t help but dance.
Food and Drink Specials
Boulder embraces any occasion to throw a party and Mardi Gras is no exception. Plenty of Pearl Street restaurants are rolling out speciality cocktails, New Orleans-style menu items, and live music. Stop by West End Tavern anytime on Fat Tuesday for house-made beignets, sazerac cocktails, and a grilled or fried shrimp po boy. Hang outside under the twinkling lights of Rayback Collective’s contemporary patio and snack on festive themed eats by La Rue Bayou. Meet up with friends for an authentic Nawlins style brunch at Lucile’s Creole Cafe. Its piping hot gumbo and crawfish etouffee will transport you to the Big Easy faster than you can say “Go Saints!”
Fat Tuesday is a cause for celebration – even if we are 1,000 miles from New Orleans. Our city knows how to get down with the best of them and Boulder’s restaurants are always up to craft, create, and cook inspired drinks and dishes. Spend your Tuesday enjoying the sweet stuff of life!
