The holiday season is a great time to give back. As you reflect on what’s in store for the year ahead, connect with other members in the community who could use your help. Nonprofit organizations are often flooded with requests for assistance this time of year, so they are sure to appreciate extra hands on deck. Here are some volunteer opportunities for you to check out in Boulder:

I Have a Dream Foundation of Boulder County Adopt-a-Family Program

In case you haven’t heard of the “I Have a Dream” program, it works in communities around the state to help low-income children, “Dreamers,” achieve their academic and career goals. The organization provides mentorship, academic enrichment, support for social-emotional development, and extracurricular opportunities beginning in elementary school and lasting all the way through college.

Every kid deserves to have a present to unwrap during the holidays, and the I Have a Dream Foundation of Boulder County seeks community members to “adopt” a Dreamer and his or her family for the holidays and provide them with gifts. For details, visit their office at 5390 Manhattan Circle, #200, or call 303-444-3636 ext. 20.

Boulder Shelter for the Homeless

The winter season (October through April) is when the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless has the greatest need for volunteers. There are plenty of positions to choose from, including:

  • Dorm Supply Volunteer
  • Staff Assistant Volunteer
  • Linens Volunteer
  • Kitchen Lead Volunteer
  • Breakfast Cook
  • Dinner Cook
  • Dinner Server
  • Kitchen Assistant
  • Intake Assistant
  • Boulder County Cares Volunteer (more information on that below!)

Of course, the shelter always welcomes donated goods. Their most urgent needs in the cooler months include towels, toiletries (including soap, shampoo, toothbrushes/toothpaste), pain/cold relievers, and linens.

Boulder County Cares

We can’t think of a better way to see the impact of your volunteer efforts than by joining Boulder County Cares (BCC), the street outreach program of the Boulder Shelter. Every winter evening (7:00-10:00 p.m.) from October 1 through April 30, volunteers visit different parts of the community and distribute blankets, gloves, hats, and other warm clothing, and provide food to unsheltered homeless people who are living on the streets. To learn more about volunteering with BCC, please call 303-468-4322

Boulder County CareConnect

This unique organization connects volunteers with disabled seniors and adults in the community to help them stay safe and live more independently. During the winter, they need more volunteers to help remove sidewalk ice and snow so that clients can comply with municipal snow shoveling regulations, provide rides to and from medical appointments, and shop and deliver groceries to local elders who may not be able to shop for groceries on their own. BCCC offers several volunteer orientations each month. Call them at 303.443.1933 ext. 402, or send an email, for more information.

Whether you’re able to commit to volunteering several days a week or just a couple of hours, your efforts are sure to be felt by members of the community who are in need. If you don’t see your favorite nonprofit on our list, contact the organization directly and see where they could use the most assistance this holiday season.
