October 2018 Events in Boulder, Colorado

Fall is here, and our city is starting to show its autumn colors. The sweaters, hot drinks, and shifting leaves signal the coming of cooler weather. There’s so much to do during this transformative and beautiful time of the year. Here are some of the highlights of October 2018 in Boulder:

Manhattan Short Film Festival

When: 10/2-10/7

Where: The Dairy

The Manhattan Short Film Festival will showcase nine short films at The Dairy, all of which are eligible for an Oscar nomination. From historical drama to surrealist romance to animated action, this year’s finalists offer a wide focus, and come from directors like Marco Gadge and Dev Patel. The best part? You get to judge which film wins the top honors. You’ll receive a ballot and add your votes to the many who participate in this global film festival. Click here for show times.

Opening Reception for Worlds Suspended in Reality

When: 10/4 from 5:30-8:30pm

Where: Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art

This reception at BMoCA will celebrate the opening of three exhibitions, collectively titled Worlds Suspended in Reality. The exhibitions will run from October through January, featuring artists Caroline Douglas, Frank Sampson, and Patricia Bramsen. All three focus on surrealistic expression, highlighting the unseen parts of our world.

Adventure Film Festival and Street Fair

When: 10/5-10/7

Where: Boulder Theater & 14th Street

Since 2004, the Adventure Film Festival has been bringing the stories of intrepid travelers and wild destinations to Boulder. This year features films that explore the waters of West Papau, winter surfing on Lake Superior, and the life of a notorious mountain climber, to list just a few of the 30+ films. The festival also offers a street fair with beer, food vendors, and games for the whole family.

Haertling House Tour by Month of Modern

When: 10/13 from 10am-4pm

Where: Throughout Boulder

Join Month of Modern for a Boulder house tour unlike any you’ve seen before. This self-guided tour features 7 homes designed by the visionary architect, Charles Haertling. The late, great architect was known for a design strategy that combined modernism and organic architecture. And as a three-term Boulder City Council member, a Deputy Mayor for the City of Boulder, and an instructor for the architecture department at the University of Colorado, Charles Haertling was an important member of our community from the mid 1950s until his death in 1984. This is a can’t-miss opportunity to walk through some of the beautiful and eccentric homes designed by this celebrated architect.

10.31.18: A Night of Darkness

When: 10/31 from 9pm-1:30am

Where: Corrida

I am excited to announce that I am teaming up with Corrida for A Night of Darkness, the Halloween party that Boulder will be talking about for years to come. Prepare for an unforgettable night of tasty food and drinks, free ink, special artists, costume contests and so much more. General admission tickets are $200/person and VIP tickets (including a gift bag and raffle entrance for a private dinner for 10 at Corrida) are $275/person.

Munchkin Masquerade

When: 10/31 from 3-6pm

Where: Pearl Street

Pearl Street, costumes, and trick-or-treating. Dress up the little ones and bring them downtown for the annual Munchkin Masquerade. Pearl Street will be full of candy, adorable costumes, and perhaps some scary monsters — but not too scary, as this event is recommended for kids 12 and under.

October is one of the best months of the year, and the diversity of events on tap this month showcases how wonderful it is to live in Boulder. Whether you’re after films, art, stunning architecture, or afternoons with the kids, you’re sure to find it here.
