January 2018 Events in Boulder, Colorado

The cold, crisp stillness of January has arrived in Colorado, and we could all use a few things to fill our calendars after the holiday rush. As always, Boulder delivers an array of activities to choose from. With so many stimulating arts and cultural events going on this month, there’s bound to be something that piques your interest.

Sign Painters: The Unacknowledged Artists

When: Friday, January 12; 6:30pm

Where: Chautauqua Community House

Discover the fascinating history of hand-painted signs, and the artists who make them, at this film screening in the famous Chautauqua Community House. Once an everyday trade, the art of sign-painting has transformed into a specialized craft struggling to compete with today’s technology. Boulder native Steve Beach, also known as Steve the Sign Painter, will lead a discussion following the film.

Bach Transfigured

When: Saturday, January 13; 7:30pm

Where: Macky Auditorium

Celebrate the spirit of Johann Sebastian Bach with pianist Simone Dinnerstein. Her stirring performance features pieces both written and inspired by Bach, including the premiere of Piano Concerto No. 3, a Boulder Philharmonic co-commission with contemporary composer Philip Glass.

An Evening in Florence

When: Saturday, January 20; 6pm

Where: Food Lab

Always wanted to sign up for a cooking class, but could never find the time? Well, consider this your chance to keep your New Year’s resolution. Boulder Food Lab’s roster of January public classes includes An Evening in Florence, during which you’ll learn to make simple, yet scrumptious, Italian dishes. Bring a friend or two along for added fun.

Boulder Wedding Showcase

When: Sunday, January 28; 11am – 2pm

Where: Rembrandt Yard & Boulder Theater

Free food, live music, a full bar, and a variety of vendors make the Boulder Wedding Showcase an enticing event for wedding enthusiasts and the recently engaged. Get inspired by some of the Boulder area’s foremost wedding experts, and enter the raffle for a chance to win an extravagant grand prize.

One Night Only: Hollywood Escape

When: Sunday, January 28; 7:30pm

Where: Gordon Gamm Theater

Join musicians Marija Stroke, Harumi Rhodes, Deborah Marshall, and David Requiro as they perform selections from the works of two of the most prolific composers in 20th century Hollywood. Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco composed music for over 200 films, and Erich Wolfgang Korngold wrote the score for 16 Hollywood movies, earning them each a place in the annals of cinema history.

For an enriching start to your year, kick things off with a gourmet cooking class, or a concert at one of Boulder’s beautiful performing arts centers. We can’t wait to see what the rest of 2018 holds in store.
