DINEinBoulder: Pizzeria Da Lupo

Every town has its share of pizza restaurants, but few are graced with one as phenomenal as Boulder’s own, Pizzeria da Lupo. Located at 2525 Arapahoe Ave., it’s a fun neighborhood pizza joint with a laid back and relaxed atmosphere.

The food here is out of this world, guests rave about dishes like their wood-fired buffalo wings, shaved Brussels sprout salad, calamari, and of course – the pizza! Wood firing the pizza gives it an unforgettable crust; one that’s the perfect combination of crunchy and soft.

This place offers up 5-star pizza at an affordable price.  Every dish at Da Lupo is hand crafted and locally sourced (when possible).  They use seasonal ingredients, which means there are always exciting changes with specials on the menu.  It’s a true Boulder hot spot that embraces the beauty and benefits of serving local, hand crafted dishes.

One of the best aspects about this pizza place is that you don’t even have to like pizza to enjoy a meal there.  In fact, you can be gluten-intolerant and leave satisfied.  Their skillets, for instance, are killer, and they’re gluten-free.  The Brussels sprout skillet, with pancetta and caramelized onion is out of this world.  Besides the skillets, many of their small plates and anti-pasta dishes are gluten-free also.  During a recent visit, I tried their Wood-fired Caesar Salad that was on special – very good & highly recommended.

In short, anyone, no matter their dietary restrictions, can dine here and have a truly memorable experience.  A lot of this is due to the creative and worldly expertise of chef and partner, Jim Cohen.

A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Jim was named one of the top chefs in the country by none other than Julia Child.  She even featured him on an episode of “Dining With Julia.”   Jim was also nominated for “Best Chef in the Southwest,” in 1991.  Needless to say, his passion for food and excellent skills have been well noted by all who have visited Da Lupo.

As with any great restaurant in Boulder, this one features an extensive beer selection.  They have over 30 different bottled beers to choose from, nearly half of which are brewed right here in Colorado.  Their draft selection is limited, but what they do have on tap comes straight out of Boulder.

Did someone say Happy Hour?

Head over any day of the week between 3 and 5pm for their selection of Happy Hour specials:

  • ½ off bottled beers
  • $2.5 drafts
  • $5 house wines
  • $6 salads
  • $2 and $3 select slices
  • $5 paninis

Who wouldn’t be turned on by a $5 panini and half priced bottled beers?

And, we can’t forget their Bomber Tuesday or Wine Wednesday specials.   They frequently change their lunch specials around as well, but to get a feel for what they’re serving up on any given day, be sure to follow them on Facebook.

Pizzeria da Lupo really does exemplify the magic that can happen when passion for good food is intertwined with the belief that local really is better.  Bring the kids, or head over for a low-key date with your special someone.  Either way, your experience will leave you wanting more.
