Send Summer Out in Style With The Boulder Creek Hometown Festival

Summer’s coming into its homestretch, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had. Before the leaves turn and the temperature drops, Boulder makes sure to pack in plenty of events to hold us over during the winter months. The premiere end of summer event is the Boulder Creek Hometown Festival, which takes place over Labor Day weekend from September 3rd-5th. The creek bed and Central Park will become festive one last time as we celebrate the end of summer the Boulder way.

The Basics

You could call the Hometown Festival a sister festival to the Boulder Creek Festival, and you wouldn’t be far off. It’s chock full of the type of events you would only find in a place like Boulder, along with the basic music, arts, crafts, food, and beer that everyone has come to expect from our little city.

Entry is free, of course, and live music will be taking place all weekend at the Bandshell. The rest of the events are split into two distinct areas: Hometown Fest East and Hometown Fest West. Fest East will be held east of Broadway, and will contain the food and beer court, vendors, and the 4th Annual LETR StarLite Classic Car & Motorcycle Show. Fest West encompasses the west side of Broadway on the Municipal Building Lawn and includes the Sports & Kids Expo, Great Zucchini Race, Big Wheel 300 Races, and the 6th Annual Hometown Festival 5k. Luckily, jumping back and forth is as easy as crossing the street.

Sports & Kids Expo

Gather up the whole family, and head over to Hometown Fest West to check out all of the latest and greatest in sports-related equipment and technology. Demos and interactive attractions, like wall climbing, bungee trampolines, and a zipline will be open for use to keep the adults entertained, while an obstacle course is ready to match kids against their parents.

Big Wheel 300 Races

Staying on the west side of things we have a children’s favorite, the big wheel race course, which runs through the heart of the Hometown Festival. On Monday from 3:00 – 4:00pm, kiddos from all age groups can enter for free and try to navigate the 300-foot long race to vie for big wheel supremacy.

Great Zucchini Race

Another kid favorite, the great zucchini race, is a quirky event that is perfectly suited to Boulder’s eclectic culture. Amateur engineers of all ages decorate and fine tune zucchinis, complete with wheels, to be raced down the great zucchini ramp. Winners of each heat will receive a prize, with heats taking place at various times throughout the day for the entire weekend.

6th Annual Hometown Festival 5k

It is a race, but it doesn’t have to be ultra competitive. In a celebration of Boulder’s outdoor lifestyle, the 7th annual Hometown Festival 5k will be held at 9am on Monday, September 5 and will start on the municipal lawn. Kids and adults alike are invited to take a stroll through the beautiful downtown area to enjoy our community’s blend of nature and city life. Adult races start at 9:00am, while the kids start at 9:45am.

4th Annual LETR StarLite Classic Car & Motorcycle Show

On Sunday, Hometown Festival East will welcome hundreds of classic cars for a contest unlike any other. Classic roadsters, police cars, and motorcycles will battle it out for titles like “Best of Show” and “Top Cop.” Registration fees from the show go towards supporting Colorado’s 14,000+ Special Olympian Athletes. Come and check out some classic rides, while also supporting a good cause.

The end of summer doesn’t have to be so bittersweet, thanks to the Boulder Creek Hometown Festival. Our list sums up the main events, but the festival offers so much more. Come out and support the Boulder community this September. And if you’re from out of town, stay a while. Our team can help you find an amazing part of Boulder to call your own.
